Flatcoats in the Field

The FCRSA has a strong commitment to maintaining the dual purpose nature of the breed.  Flat-Coated Retrievers have enjoyed success not only in the Society's WC/WCX program, but in AKC Hunt Tests, Field Trials and in upland fields and duck blinds as personal family hunting companions. Click HERE for extensive information on field activities for FCR's, as well as articles on training.  The articles, links and books section also contains several excellent articles on training FCR's for field work.

In 1975, the Working Certificate Test (WC) was established by the FCRSA primarily to encourage the use and maintenance of the natural working and retrieving abilities of the Flat-Coated Retriever and as a useful aid in the selection of breeding stock.

The WC test is designed to test the natural abilities of the Flatcoat including memory, intelligence, attention, nose, marking ability, courage, perseverance and style.

In 1980, the Working Certificate Excellent test (WCX) was established by the FCRSA to encourage  the further use and development, through training, of the natural working and retrieving abilities of the Flat-Coated Retriever and as a useful aid in the selection of breeding stock.

The WCX test is designed to test the Flatcoat’s trainability in addition to its natural abilities which include memory, intelligence, attention, marking ability, nose, courage, perseverance and style.

FCRSA-Sponsored Working Certificate and Working Certificate Excellent Tests are hosted by local clubs throughout the US.  Check back for scheduled events.
